Allowed audience members to come up to boxing ring (involvement) Slant in seating, stage on lower level and seats incline upwards. Used to use masks to amplify voices back then. Greek: open roman: built theatres up, still had open top. Box set is great, would create obstructions if audiences were located at different angles. Can use a lot of scenery, wings provide area to hide rigs. Indoors -> don"t have to worry about weather. Actors can hide from view easily for costume & scene changes. Block stage because there is one perspective for audience. Less set pieces -> lower production cost. Open nature of stage -> more inviting. Issues may arise with use of set pieces. Limited fly space, scene changes will occur in front of audience. Engagement with audience, actors are always in full view. More egalitarian experience, allows more front row seating. Lower production cost, cannot use big set pieces. Limited with set pieces, must keep them small.
