Document Summary

Large disadvantages: more wealth potentially through resources, vast areas can be inaccessible and have high cost of transportation, requires minimal amount of time all places can be reached from a given area. Great distances must be traveled for given area: in between shape where area is compact with some narrow exceptions. Perforated: an area with a hole in it. Absolute location can determine resources available and good/bad climate. Landlocked countries are at a disadvantage as they lack coastal regions and access to shipping lanes. Territorial sovereignty is three-dimensional, including air space over area, ground projected towards center of earth, and borders: coastal areas have sovereignty 200 nautical miles into the sea. Frontier zones existed before borders were formed. Natural boundaries: rivers, coastlines, mountains, etc, high potential for boundary disputes (not super precise) Geometric boundaries: usually parallel lines of meridians, very precise and often run through sparsely populated areas. Created before an area is highly populated.
