Document Summary

Communication: a symbolic, transactional process that involves creating and sharing meanings through consistent patterns of interaction. Affects quality of relationships and connections we have with other people. Ex. if someone says that is a nice skirt and we over hear it, we do not really understand what they mean by that unless we know the context. Could be a flirt, could be a compliment, could be sexual harassment. Paying attention to what is said and what is meant. Messages- meaning of the words and sentences spoken, what anyone with a dictionary and a grammar book could figure out. Two people in conversation usually agree on what the message is. Metamessage- the meaning that is not said but can be gleaned from every aspect of the context. Ie voice, phrasing, the way something is said, who is saying it. Can be a source of both comfort and hurt. To understand communication you have to look at message and meta message.
