HDFS 1060 Lecture 6: CH 6 _ Interdependency
CH 6 : Interdependency
Social Exchange
● Main focus- rewards/cost of relationships
● Assumptions
○ Social behaviors are exchanges
○ Maximize rewards/reduce costs
○ Will accept certain cost
○ Obligation of reciprocity
Key Concepts
● Rewards : anything within interactions thats is desirable and welcome & that brings
enjoyment to the recipient
● Costs : sacrifice, a loss, something you have to put in / give up.
○ Some of the most important cost of an intimate relationship is not knowing where
the relationship is headed, frustration over your partner's imperfections, and
regrets about all the things you don’t get to do because you're in that relationship/
● Profit
○ Reward - cost = outcome. Outcome describes the net profit or loss of a person.
● Reciprocity
○ Norm of reciprocity
○ Norm of fairness
○ Equity
● Dependence and power
● Perceptions
● Expectations
○ Comparison level : describes the value of the outcomes that we believe we
deserve in our dealings with others
■ Based on our past experience
■ Represents our neutral point in continuum that ranges from misery to
delight.
■ Measures our satisfaction. Satisfaction derives from how our outcomes
compare to our expectations. Outcomes - CL = (dis)satisfaction
○ Influenced by family or origin experiences
○ Info gained from observation
○ Own experience in relationships
● Commitment
● Comparison level for alternatives: determines whether we could be doing better
somewhere else
○ Will stay in a relationship where they’re unhappy in, because they think they’d be
even worse alone
○ Outcomes - CL (alt) = dependence or interdependence
Typology of Relationships
Document Summary

Outcome describes the net profit or loss of a person. Comparison level : describes the value of the outcomes that we believe we deserve in our dealings with others. Comparison level for alternatives: determines whether we could be doing better somewhere else. Will stay in a relationship where they"re unhappy in, because they think they"d be even worse alone. Outcomes - cl (alt) = dependence or interdependence. Outcome higher than both cl and cl (alt) Outcome is higher than cl (alt) but lower than cl. Outcome is higher than cl but lower than cl (alt) Approach motivation : we try to satisfy an appetite for desirable experiences.
