A theory is an explanation of what we observe: ex: children of the same family have different social personalities, theories are in response to observations, observations are independent. Life-span dev theory: people develop in different ways over time: different domains of dev, social skills, physical development, intellectual dev, moral dev, how to understand the trajectory of ind dev over time. Traditional debate resolves around contributions of nature vs nurture: mutual influence. Ex: when a boy is born dressed in blue, said to be manly: nature: genetics (portion of dna, hereditary characteristics) Genetics include physical attributes height, hair color, genetic anomalies. Predisposed to diseases: nurture: the environment. Your coaches, teacher, parents how they act towards you and their actions towards you affect how you are. Someone who interacted with you but you still remember (a coach telling you you will never be good at sports, mom was always anxious about your weight) always remember this.
