See anderson & sabatelli chapters 1 and 2. Of course we know family influences development, but this doesn"t mean it"s not important. We want to capture the uniqueness of family in order to discover its influence. There is a multi-generational legacy: what has happened within your family through the years is still present. Identify other members of the family as significant others. Both positive and negative bonds (support and tension) Some families very close and nurturing while some are high conflict. Strategies for meeting the needs of family members: Families have tasks/needs that they need to accomplish and families develop strategies to provide them. Ex. families that don"t provide food vs. families that let child eat oreos. Family composition: form or structural makeup of a family system. Family is unique due to its unique form. What you know about family composition is much less than what you don"t know (power dynamics, economic standing, level of harmony, sibling relationships, values)
