Thinking of family as if it were a system. Unique: system defined by the relationship among the parts rather than the parts themselves. Car engine-same parts in different cars but interact differently. Wholeness-focus on how family members interact, not who, how they interact generation through generation: the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Organizational complexity- systems within systems, subsystems: ex. Interdependence- change in one part of the system influences all the other parts: reverberates through entire system, makes a difference, environment is constantly infiltrated by events in our environment. First-order tasks: how family executes tasks, generic, similar for everyone. Second-order tasks: how family manages changes in tasks, modify, change, adapt strategies and rules in result of changes in instructions and environment. Family themes-points of emphasis of a family: ex. Cultural-italian, jewish, religion: resources and themes-come to light if you are aware of how your family uses:
