What we demand of children is to regulate their social behavior/conform to social expectations for appropriate behavior-please and thank you-no kicking or biting. Crisis = autonomy vs. shame/doubt- erikson did this- the sico social comes between individual needs and social demands- tension. The failure to resolve crisis leads to shame/doubt. Shame is feeling like a failure in the eyes of others- your significant others. When others make us feel like we disappoint them internalize a sense of shame. -made to feel assahmed of themselves going to feel doubt. Shame and doubt go together-go hand and hand. Don"t see yourself as competent or masterful b/c people communicate to me i am a failure-unadequate. Central process = imitation- what is needed to accomplish and succeed to manage this central process- taking on learning and mastery children way is imiatation- showing them what to do. Prime adaptive ego quality = will- results from success.
