HDFS 1070 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Family Life Education, Family Therapy
Document Summary
Common assertion in media/politics that 1/2 marriages end in divorce- The divorce rate is decreasing, because people are marrying later than ever before, allow young adults to be more prepared to deal with long term relationship, more fixed identity. Economics- divorce is made more difficult when people have a lot of barriers. Sizeable percentage of couples who remain married whole life time but are in toxic (unhappy, uncaring, not nurturing) marriages. Divorce should not be only indicator to show success. Begins process of reorganization that has many possible outcomes (remarriage, more children, etc. ) We don"t do enough prevention and family life education for healthy relationships/dealing w divorce. 75% of divorced women and 80% of divorced men remarry. Note: these rates change dramatically for women as they age (older woman is when she becomes single, greater the chance she will live rest of life single) Note: what we are really focusing on is dissolution and disruption (of relationship), not divorce.
