Satisfaction versus distress: high conflict, unsatisfying relationship, distress = people in marital distress believe there is no hope for the future/future relationships. Constantly unhappy, bids to repair happiness fail, needs are not met. Move on because alternatives are better and the costs are tolerable. Dependence: determined by no better alternatives or have high barriers to break up. Divorce when there are better alternatives or when there is nothing costing you to break up (are you willing to tolerate the costs?) Will you tolerate the costs: financial considerations, moral/religious convictions.
