Document Summary

Discussion of the national divorce rate for first marriages. Common assertion in media, church, world that 1 in 2 marriages ends in divorce: not true. Divorce rate is decreasing over the last ten years. Decreasing because people are marrying later than before, better prepared for demands of intimate relationship, more fixed/stable identity, better foundation for marriage, more economic stability. More accurate perception: some married couples remain married for lifetime even if not in happy, nurturing relationship, in a toxic relationship. Divorce is not the only indicator of an unsuccessful relationship. Divorce begins a process of reorganization in family and individual lives, has many possible outcomes, changes trajectory. Seventy-five percent of divorced women and 80% of divorced men remarry. Women as they get older have a greater chance of remaining single. Note: what we are really focusing on is dissolution and disruption not divorce. > please note that these rates change dramatically for women as the age.
