The cocci of medical importance, gram and cocci - the staphylococci. Exo toxins concerned because gram positive. Not centralized and will target specific organ systems. No concern about endo because gram negative. Staff infection = present in most environment, open found in nose. Stay purple because not crystallizing and being trapped in peptidoglycan. Coagulase - negative staph (s. not aureus) Staphylococcus epidermidis (nosocomial esp. from shunts, catheters), causes endocarditis, utis. Staphylococcus saprophyticus (2nd most common cause uti in sexually active young women) Promotes clotting key factor of staff = coagulase. Enzyme breaks down h2o2 to h2o, o2 (bubbles) Hyaluronidase - digests intercellular glue (hyaluronic acid) of connective tissue - spreading factor . Targets glue of cells and breaks it down, disrupts normal barriers, burrow way down into viable tissue to live, breed and grow. Causes desquamation of skin in staph scalded skin syndrome (ssss) Toxic shock toxin (produced by s. aureus) Fever, vomiting, goes to other organ systems quickly.
