Variable morphology - coccobacilli to long filaments, flagella, no capsules or spores. Resistant to cold, heat, salt, ph extremes. Cold = foods you might eat right out of fridge. Epidemic listeriosis: associated with contaminated foods (mexican cheese, coleslaw, milk, ice cream (grow in cold), hummus, cold cuts. Especially immunocompromised or pregnant women are are risk. Pregnant women will develop symptoms but really about developing fetus can cause miscarriages. Early onset: intrauterine sepsis, stillbirth or shortly thereafter. Late onset: meningitis between birth and 3 weeks. Later on in pregnancy or during delivery. Can swab and test different food products. Plated and held at 4* c to allow for proliferation. Susceptible individuals should avoid products made from raw milk, packaged shredded cabbage, cold cuts and salads. Cheese - shouldn"t made with pasteurized milk. Mild diarrhea or low grade fever (flu like symptoms) tired , back pain, headache. Can be much more severe in immunocompromised patients.
