Difficulty in three areas of day-to-day functioning. A study of twins indicate genetic risk for bpd. Cluster b often correlated with histories of mood do, alcoholism and somatization do. Schizoid and schizotypal more common in 1stdegree relatives with schizophrenia. Some studies show biologic factors with bpd as well as changes in dopamine, serotonin. Bpd parental figures are both nurturing and punishing. Individuals with severe pd have been associated with issues r/t enmeshment, fear of abandonment, fear of intimacy. Can be a precursor to schizophrenia or delusional disorder. Psychotic symptoms (hallucinations & delusions) may be present. Use concrete, specific words rather than abstractions. Respond to suspicious ideas by focusing on feelings. Example: you feel others are picking on you. Conduct brief one to one sessions (avoid lengthy contacts) Gradually introduce client to group sessions to build trust. Use role play to help client identify feelings/thoughts. Be alert to signs of suspiciousness and employ similar techniques as schizoid pd.
