Document Summary

Abortion and the conflict of claims: joel feinberg (thinks abortion is impermissible if we grant jjt fetus has right to life, maybe or maybe not impermissible depending on how we grant jjt assumptions) responds to judith jarvis thomson. However he thinks when such right comes into competition with fetuses right to life, we may not get same conclusion as thomson. A. it is okay to kill in self-defe(cid:374)se i(cid:374) o(cid:396)de(cid:396) to sa(cid:448)e o(cid:374)e"s o(cid:449)(cid:374) life. Proportionality matters in all cases of self-defense: proportionate response to a punch is not to kill, person coming after your little finger, cannot kill them. Stealing your purse, okay to punch them: when somebody attacks you they forfeit some of their rights to equal consideration which allows you to harm them a little more. If the aggressor has not forfeited his right to equal consideration then proportionality must be strict, not lenient. Treat harm done to them as equally morally proportionate to harm of us.
