PNB 2265 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Aquaporin, Osmosis, Tubular Fluid
Document Summary
Kidneys filter 180 lit/day of fluid; in ~45 minutes, your entire plasma volume is filtered. Nephron: keep what we wanna keep, get rid of rest. Urine output ~ 1 2 lit/day. 99% of filtrate volume is reabsorbed by kidney; only 1% becomes urine. Regulation of water and ion (salt) balance. Note regarding the excretory function, the kidneys are the true cleansers of the blood, removing wastes from extracellular fluid. Anatomy gross external (bean shaped fist sized organs, below rib cage, behind peritoneum) Renal cortex: outer cortical region, inner juxtamedullary region, nephrons form urine who begin and end in cortex. Renal medulla: pyramids, outer (cortical) and inner (juxtamedullary, nephron loops dip into medulla as well as collecting ducts. Renal pelvis: minor and major calyx empty into renal pelvis. There is an osmotic gradient from the outer cortex to the inner medulla (increase) Outer cortex: 300 mosm (normal, maintain homeostatically) Afferent: delivering blood to glomerular capillaries (tufted)
