Document Summary
Psyc 1100 lecture 7 scientific literacy 4 + biopsychology 1. Original study (fritz strack): examining whether our facial expressions can influence our mood (i. e. whether smiling makes us happier and frowning makes us sadder) Participants read cartoons and rated their level of humor. Results: smiling group found cartoons to be more funny, suggesting that the physical action of smiling influences our emotions and perception of humor. There was little to no difference between the ratings of the two groups. In the original experiment, the participants were not being watched, while in the replication, the participants were being videotaped and were made aware of it. The experiment was split into two sections one with a video camera and one without. Replicated the effects of both previous experiments, showing that both the original experiment and failed replication were correct (facial feedback is real, but is inhibited when being observed) Replication is an opportunity , not a crisis.
