Document Summary

Consciousness, cont: the neural correlates of sleep. Infant"s eyes would dart from side-to-side at certain times when they slept. "eye motility" movements described as "rapid, jerky, and binocularly symmetrical" Darting eye period would be sandwiched between two periods of rest. This was termed "rem": rapid eye movement. Used to record electrical activity in brain. Eeg caps with electrodes throughout are placed on head to record and amplify electric signals in brain. Many kinds of eeg, but all use same principle. Recording and monitoring brain states: beta waves - alert, active, awake, engaged, alpha waves - rest, relaxed, drowsy, theta waves - shallow sleep, delta waves - deep sleep. Nrem 2: theta waves + sleep spindles. Nrem 3: delta waves + slow wave sleep. Rem: paradoxical sleep: sleep, learning, and memory. Then tested after varying intervals (1 hr, 2 hr, etc. ) If they slept during interval, they remembered more.
