Document Summary

Left hemisphere controls right side of body, vice versa. Lot of functional symmetry, but also functional asymmetry of hemispheres. Damage to left frontal lobe slightly below motor cortex: Difficulty for individual to speak and write. Theory: broca"s area stores information that turns words into muscle actions needed to produce the words. Damage to the left temporal lobe, near auditory cortex: Can speak fluently, but words are incomprehensible. Theory: wernicke"s area converts sensory analysis performed by auditory cortex into comprehensible words. Language functions aren"t always controlled by left hemisphere. Split brain studies- cutting off the corpus callosum to split hemispheres. Epilepsy- seizure would start in one hemisphere and spread to the other, this was used as a treatment. By limiting information to one hemisphere and see how the information is processed. Corpus callosum takes information from one hemisphere and shares it with the other.
