Children of different ages are studied at the same time. Children are examined repeatedly over a prolonged period of time. Difficult to manage (high cost, time, participants drop out (attrition) danger in repeat testing. Children observed intensively over a short period of time while a change is occurring pros: Short, but detailed patterns of change with individuals. May be hard to pinpoint when and how often to measure. Researchers have a responsibility to anticipate mental risks risk/benefit tradeoff. Preforamation idea- human preformed but just tiny, only got larger over time. Aristotle rejected this through chicken hatching; epigenesis shows theres a slow gradual development. Each gamete has half of the genetic material found in other cells zygote = fertilized egg. Females more susceptible to very early generational loss. Boys more vulnerable to infant mortality and developmental disorders, and men are more vulnerable to illness and accidents. A cephalocaudal pattern of development refers to areas closer to head which develop earlier.
