Six scenarios presented to 96 american and 42 japanese participants. Participants imagine that they were hearing about a former high-school classmate (o) at a reunion, whom they had known but had been neither friendly or unfriendly with. The scenarios described the o"s present situation, and participants rated: Scenarios: success vs. failure; deserved, not deserved, or personally relevant to the participant. Person a did not go to college, but won a large prize in the lottery and became rich. Person b was arrested for selling drugs to children, and went to jail. Person c was struck by lightning and is forced to wear a brace. Person d married my prom date, whom i am still in love with.
