1. Medical Model
a. The concept that someone with a problem seeks assessment, diagnosis, and
treatment from a professional. In theory, the problem is them solved (ex- trip to
the ER for a broken leg)
i. patient has problem
ii. assess the patient: what is the problem?
iii. diagnose the patient: that's the problem.
iv. treat the patient: here’s the solution.
v. problem solved!
vi. several disorders can be cured this way
b. Why is this model important? - it is the most prevalent model in healthcare today
2. WHO-ICF Disability Model (not covered in this class)
a. Model to describe the process of disability for a person within their environment.
b. Why is this model important? - provides helpful definitions for terms associated
with disability (disability, impairment, handicap, etc.)

communication

-The speech therapist movement from the late 19th century, and massive casualties
from wars that led to communication disorders.
-EBENEZER PORTER- (1772-1834)
-WHY IS HE IMPORTANT?
-Ebenezer Porter was one of the first scholars to write about elocution, and more
importantly, he wrote briefly about “impediments to good elocution,” what we now call
communication disorders
-Connecticut born
-known for his association with the elocution movement
-lectures on eloquence and style (stutter, lisps, etc.)
-Analysis Of The Principles of Rhetorical Delivery as Applied in Reading and
Speaking - (1827)
*people would talk about and share their ideas at a lyceum = entertainment form
*elocutionist= teach people how to speak well
