ANTH 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Enculturation, Heterosexuality, Bechdel Test
Document Summary
Sex: biological differences between male and female. Gender: social classification of masculine and feminine. A society"s gender ideology is its totality of ideas about sex, gender and the natures of men and women, including their sexuality, and the relations between the genders. Heteronormative: denoting or relating to a world view that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation: categories of male and female are not universal. Enculturation into gender roles begins early and continues throughout life. Imagine that you are going to have a child. Bechdel test: comic strip dykes to watch out for, 1985. All of these reinforce the idea that women are naturally weaker or emotional. Inequality is less in foraging societies, but when there is a large game: males acquire status and power. Men also face pressure associated with gender ideology. The manhood puzzle: why manhood needs to be proven.
