AS AM 156 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Desegregation
Document Summary
Roberts v. city of boston (1850): boston won, tried to end racial discrimination in. Sarah enrolled in black schools that were far from her boston home and underfunded. Dad tried to enroll her in closer white schools. Not all african-americans supported roberts; most believed in "separate but equal" schooling and questioned the kind of education their children would receive from a white teacher. African american parents began publicly expressing resentment because they were taxed to support schools which their children were not allowed to attend. A state statute existed that allowed any student unlawfully excluded from public school to recover damages. Unsuccessful because authorities reasoned that special provisions had been made for "colored" students to have a school. Supreme court ultimately ruled that local elected officials had the authority to control local schools and that separate schools did not violate black students" rights. The decision was cited over and over again in later cases to justify segregation.
