Southerners said that in open propaganda that slaves were happy. Scholarly work shows that it warped criminal law, established system of discrimination and distrust between white and black ppl. Records of the race riots show level of hostility. Slavery gives slave owners a license to physically and sexually abuse without punity. Public actors and officials handed over or participated in the murder. Public factor showed and scared the slaves that this would happen if you disobeyed. Did nothing to stop whiote supremacist groups to stop violence. Southern states should have total autonomy over their law.
