Document Summary

Experiment 10b: multi-step synthesis of nylon-6,6 from cyclohexene. The ultimate objective of this experiment was to synthesize nylon-6,6 polyamide in a three step process. A step growth polymerization is used to make polyamides such as nylon. In this process the chains can grow via the addition of monomers, dimers and so forth. Here using an acid chloride to perform the polymerization, allows for the reaction to occur at room temperature. The entire process of synthesizing nylon-6,6 required a multi-step reaction scheme of 3 transformation, which will be discussed further in the following section. The first of these transformations was the oxidation of cyclohexene to adipic acid using sodium tungstate. Day 1 of this region began with the catalyzed oxidation of cyclohexene. To begin, 0. 50g of sodium tungstate and 0. 56ml of aliquate 336 were added to a 25ml round bottom flask.
