A discipline that grew out of many other disciplines, elds where they talk to each other (through discourse: people (sources/receivers) exchanging meaningful symbols (gestures, languages, words) Can be disrupted by noise (disrupts communication; e. g. , loss of signal when on phone, someone stutters, thinking about something else/ what you will respond) in various contexts (interpersonal dyads, groups, media, etc. ) And note: there is no s in communication studies! A specialist in communication : studies what people do, technology is involved, study how comm ts in culture and society. Communication context: major areas of study in the comm eld, researchers focus on different aspects of communication. Intrapersonal: internal, communication within a person family comm, health thinking, making decisions, talking to self, diary, grocery list, reminders, etc. Focus is on how we think/process info about other people (e. g. making attributions= explain someone"s behavior, forming impressions) Interpersonal: between people/individuals, communication with another (dyad) parent-child, romantic partners can be face-to-face or mediated.
