●Nonverbal codes (ways of sending nonverbal messages)
○Paralanguage
■Anything to do with our voice
■Vocalizations (crying, laughing, grunting)
■Voice qualities
●Pitch and volume
●Rate and fluency
●Quality (resonance (bounce off walls), nasality)
●Accent (pronunciation)
●Intonation (natural rising and falling within sentence structure)
○Ex: intonation providing emphasis
■“I didn’t steal her dog”
○Personal appearance
■Body displays (hair color, style, piercing, etc.)
■Clothing & artifacts
●Can signal authority, legitimacy, belonging, etc.
○Oculesics (eye contact/gaze)
■Eye contact can signal confidence, immediacy
■Avoidance often taken as dishonesty, insincerity, discomfort
○Proxemics (space, distance, territory)
■Interpersonal distances
■Claiming our space
●Your stuff is an extension of you
○Kinesics (movements & gestures)
■Illustrators
●Illustrators are good compliments to help us display what we’re
trying to day
■Emblems
●Symbols that have meaning
■Affect displays
●Shows emotion/how you feel
●Jumping when fav team scores
■Adapters
●Little movements we make, most of the time we dont realize were
making them
●When were nervous or bored or dealing with situation
●During exams/concentration
