COMM 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Verb, Tennis Ball, Onomatopoeia
Document Summary
The verbal side of communication plays a large role in the way we choose symbols in our conversation. Paper 2: separation of contexts (verbal and nonverbal) within a communication, and also how they are tied together (how each part of the convo is intertwined) For verbal contexts: look at language/word use. Language has norms (that aren"t necessarily rules): when someone asks a question, we respond with an answer, etc. Language allows for displacement (of ideas, time, etc. ) Ex: language can be used to talk about what happened in the past, future, etc ! Words and verbal use makes this easier to convey, unlike nonverbal cues. Can be used to discuss what is not right in front of us. Can be used to discuss things that aren"t even real: imagination, ideas, thoughts. Unique to words and verbal language use. Arbitrary: based on nothing; no natural, corresponding, rational reason for (something)
