COMM 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nonverbal Communication, Paralanguage, Eye Contact
Document Summary
Common misperception: truth is in people"s nonverbals. Perpetuated by media and my misreadings of nonverbals you can lie to me with your words but you can"t lie to me with your eyes incorrect. Relational significance to nonverbals; makes you overthink small actions. Complement verbal comm: emphasizes and goes along with it. Voice tone goes up when you"re more excited (louder) Emojis: thumbs up means good, i got it etc. Can be ambiguous; have to make sure you use substitutes that people know. Raising hand in class to get attention. Turn and look to get someone to speak. This is where we get the misperception. To be present and aware in the moment. Ex: face to face: using eye contact, nodding, facial expressions, leaning slightly forward. In conversations, over facetime, face to face using tone, facial expressions, nonverbals overall used to get feedback.
