Everyone has experiences communicative differences; we need to study why. *will be asked about cultural groupings, not specific cultures. Trick or treating: houses give them candy; parents have to tell their children to say thank you. Ex: cultural differences (some) italians: you take what they offer; ex. Second helpings (some) iranians: you offer the shirt off your back and the guest is supposed to refuse. Different cultures show up at different times. Ex: americans - some 10-15 minutes later. Ex: latin american - around 9 ish. Ex: javanese - might not show up at all. Monochronic cultures: time conscious; prefer tasks/people one-at-a-time. Ex: getting in lines to do things one at a time. Polychronic cultures: deal with multiple tasks/people at once; schedules more fluid. Mullin v quiet for a minute during lecture uncomfortable. Blended/melting pot countries tend to change, but traditional american aversion. Taoist: one who speaks does not know . Japanese: to say nothing is a flower .
