ESS 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Histamine, Semipermeable Membrane, Collagen
Document Summary
Understand the physiological process of each phase of healing. Define pain and discuss the various type of pain. Certain physiological events must occur during each of the phases. Healing process is a continuum and phases overlap one another with no definitive beginning or end points. Blood clotting system forms a dam to block the drainage. Platelets come into contact with collagen while enzyme thrombin initiates the formation of a fibrin mesh , and clumps into a stable clot. Upon tissue injury the process o healing begins immediately. Without the inflammatory phase, the other phases will not occur. Phagocytosis: process where cells clean the injured area. Leukocytes (white blood cell) and phagocytic cells are delivered to injured tissue. White blood cells called neutrophils enter the wound to destroy bacteria and remove debris 2-4 days. These cells also secrete growth factors and proteins that attract immune system cells to the wound to facilitate tissue repair.
