Oldest known and most widely used psychoacive drug. People were drawn to it for the mental/emoional efects. Thirsty farmers discovered that grapes, as well as the starch in potatoes, rice, corn, fruit, and grains could be fermented into alcohol. Widely used as: reward, food, cure-all, sacrament, subsitute for water, social lubricant, tranquilizer, source of revenue from taxes.
