FAMST 101D Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Gracie Allen, Kinescope, Original Productions
Document Summary
Comedy working in dynamic relationship with live audience. From new york to hollywood, urban to suburban. Differences: new shows/scripting taking place on a weekly basis; could recirculate material with vaudeville but not anymore. Initially live tv was recorded on film (rca kinescope) Later, tv shot on telefilm and videotape for delayed broadcast and syndication. Close ties between legitimate theater community and these dramas. Demand for new teleplays --> demand for more scripts . Started to compete with hollywood for filmic properties (and scripts) Competition for material increased number of original productions. Seemed to promise great gentile hope for tv just as radio did. Even had sponsors that didn"t produce for consumers (us steel and alcoa) a) . During the time, there was a lot of government regulation against large monopoly firms. Firms (like alcoa) were monopolizing their markets, which gave them too much power Leading to them being investigated by the government. So they sponsored programs to avoid antitrust violations.
