PHIL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Euthyphro Dilemma, Evil Demon, Omnipotence
Document Summary
Review : the euthyphro dilemma: the pious god-beloved because of its own nature, Is it pious just because the gods love it. The pious is what all the gods love. The property of being loved by the gods (do not equal) The property of have the qualities that pious things have the cause the god to love them: euthyphro endorses both. God: i commanded it because it is bad (dct is not true) God seems bound by a moral order. This is in tension with his being ii. omnipotent. God : it wrong because i said it"s wrong. Then it seems like morality is arbitrary. At the end , no definition of piety has been reached. We do not or cannot have knowledge of the external world. All of the objects or events we experience /could experience and take for granted as existing. It is impossible (in principle) for anyone to know anything about the external world.
