54 views5 pages

Document Summary

Some unsaturated fatty acids, e. g. linoleic acid: nutrients that are required in trace amounts but cannot be synthesized by our body. Some enzymes will not function without the vitamins: water soluble: b complex & c, vitamin a (retinol):essential for vision & our photoreceptors. Fat soluble: a, d, e, k: golden rice: gmo vitamin a added to rice, vitamin d : important in child development, skeletal deficiency, rickets, vitamin e: muscle maintenance, helps blood clot, vitamin k, minerals, macrominerals - ca2+. Special functions: nerve impulses, muscle contraction, secretion: main functions of kidneys. Filtration, reabsorption, secretion, excretion: outside is renal cortex inside: renal medulla. Formation of filtrate at an excretory structure: blood pressure pumps blood to kidneys is squeezed through the glomerulus, which acts as a filter; filters fluid from the blood, reabsorption, reabsorption of nutrients from a filtrate. Salt leaving ascending limb increases osmolarity in medulla. Salt draws out water from descending limb: decrease in filtrate volume.
