Document Summary

Spread through trading posts that became cities. Had cities on the edge of the persian empire in what is now turkey. Led to a lot of greek integration into persian society. Greek doctors and soldiers were very important to persia. These cities had to pay tribute to the persians. Persians tried to invade mainland greece and got kicked out by the athenians. Athenians basically started collecting tribute from other greek cities. They collected goods in exchange for protection. Allowed the city to amass a lot of wealth. Became a political, cultural, and intellectual center in 5th c. greece. Problem with oligarchs conspiring against each other and causing instability and also taking too much land. Those who didn"t have land were given land that they had to work on and some became slaves because they couldn"t pay the rent. Gave the vote to all citizens, in essence toppling the oligarchy. Not as democratic as one would think.
