Julius caesar: wanted to become a dictator king. Autocrat: power is in the hands of 1 man. Augustus presented himself as someone who was benevolent. Spain, gaul (modern day france), syria and turkey. Takes on name augustus (meaning blessed/fortunate) in 27 bce. The latin meaning of augustus" name= favored by the gods. Sense that he is offered to be the single ruler; however, he refused it. Too look not like he was (false persona) Pax romana= peace of rome --> art of love. Didn"t particularly want him to become a poet. At 16, he went on cursus honorum, which is the "path to honor" He took on military and administrative duty but this didn"t last long because he wanted to chase girls and sports. Art of love (pg 10, 167) 1. find them 2. pursue 3. ensure lasting (168) speaking about love as if it is a hunt.
