Document Summary

Trying to establish a new relationship between variables that creates a new lower baseline for behavior. Opposite of reinforcement, want operant behavior to decrease. May be a component of some behavior modification procedures punishment- 1)occurrence of behavior that is 2) followed immediately by a consequence, which: makes the behavior less likely to occur in future. Decrease in future probability of behavior occurring in a similar situation. Behavior and consequence need to happen close in time to one another so that established (connection between them is understood) contingency is. Different from common definition of punishment in society. *punishment involves immediate decrease in behavior, whereas extinction involves a slower decrease. Positive punishment- add/present an aversive stimulus (punisher) following a behavior that makes behavior less likely to occur ex) punisher- dirty look or other negative consequence. Punisher- stimulus that follows behavior which results in a decrease in future probability of behavior (also called an aversive stimulus)
