Nervous habits- nail biting, hair pulling, thumb sucking, grinding teeth. Tics and tourette"s disorder- motor tics, vocal tics, or a combination of both. Stuttering- repetition of words or syllables, prolongations or hesitations in speech sounds. These things are habitual, meaning that they are largely involuntary and happen usually in periods of stress. A habit behavior becomes a problem behavior when: Habit behavior occurs excessively (great frequency or duration) Causes physical damage (hair loss, damage to teeth. Habit reversal- strategy applied to nervous habits, tics, and stuttering. Involves habit inconvenience review, awareness training, competing response training, symbolic rehearsal, public display, and social support components. Habit inconvenience review- review of the impact of behavior, includes before and after pictures, total amount of money spent on behavior, etc. to make person realize significance of behavior. Awareness training- identify every instance of behavior to make person aware of when they engage in behavior; can be done by self or others in environment.
