Document Summary
Non western: meaning is embedded in the way message is presented. International business language is english; makes americans feel as if they should be in power; people who are less fluent seem less intelligent even though they aren"t. Multicultural teams typically have a flat structure which could make some cultures uncomfy. Some cultures have extreme respect for authority. Speed of decisions and how much analysis is required beforehand differ between cultures. 4 strategies for dealing with these challenges. 1) adaptation: adapting practices or attitudes without making changes to the group"s membership. Works when team members willing to acknowledge and name their cultural differences and assume responsibility for figuring out how to live with them. 2) structural intervention: deliberate reorganization or reassignment designed to reduce interpersonal friction or to remove source of conflict. Approach can be extremely effective when obvious subgroups demarcate the team. 3) managerial intervention: when a manager behaves like a judge making a final decision without team involvement.
