ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pentose, Silage, Polysaccharide
Document Summary
Glucose is the primary subunit in most carbohydrates. Glucose is the primary building block in most plants. Carbohydrates are the primary component found in livestock feeds. Carbs are a renewable resource - because when the animal eats them, they are converted into co2, which is then used to form carbs again (through photosynthesis) Carbs take up 70% of the dry matter of forages and 80% of the dry matter of cereal grain. Forages are high fiber feed ingredients - hay, pasture and silage. Dry matter basis assumes no water is present (100% dry matter) Because nutrients are found in the dry matter portion of feeds, the quantity of nutrients will not change when water is added or removed. However, the percentage of nutrient present in the feed will change if water is added or removed. Carbs are metabolized to provide energy (calories) Animals can get calories from carbs, fats and proteins! Carbs are plentiful and cheap in the united states.
