Bovine virus diarrhea virus, persistentlyinfected cattle and infertility. Mutation in bvd virus occurs very frequently. Produces substantial genotypic, antigenic and pathogenic bvdv strains. Most mutations on the 3" prime end of the virus genome (5" prime end is very conserved but distinguishes the two genotypes) Rna viruses like bvdv are actually swarms of virus: genotype 1. Leads to 12 sub genotypes within type 1 bvdv genotypes. Rna viruses like bvdv are actually swarms of virus: genotype 2. No proofreading function as rna genome is replicated leads to genetic drift in bvdv. Leads to 2 subgenotypes in type 2 bvdv. Most common biotype -90% of all field isolates. Only biotype capable of generating immune tolerant and therefore persistently infected (pi) cattle. The noncytopathic bvdv is always the source of the cytopathic bvdv. Pi animals-0. 01-0. 4% of all feeder cattle entering feedlots. Pi cervids: 0. 02-0. 4% of all wild deer. Acute, transient or primary infection of normal, immune competent adults.
