BISC208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Allele Frequency, Genetic Drift, Evolution
Document Summary
Must involve descent through genetic inheritance to be considered evolution. Over a large number of years, evolution produces tremendous diversity in forms of life. Genetic variation: evolution is responsible for both the remarkable similarities we see across all life and the amazing diversity of that life. Evolution helps us to understand the history of life. A great deal of evidence supports natural selection as a mechanism of evolution. Sexual reproduction can introduce new gene combinations into a population. This genetic shuffling is another important source of genetic variation. Micro-evolution: small scale evolution (change in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next) Macro-evolution: large scale evolution (the descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations) Evolutionary theory that predicts that related organisms will share similarities that are derived from common ancestors. Anatomical, developmental and molecular homologies are examples of evidence of evolution.
