Very small part of the school age population. 09-10 school year ages 6-21 = 25,813 students served under visual impairment category of idea. Fewer than 2 in 1,000- this figure does not include low vision - only about. 1 in 250 children with an iep have vision loss. There are about 20 types and causes. Mostly the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing on the retina clearly- myopia, etc. Damage to eye(s) muscular or optical system- cataracts, etc. Cvi- eyes are fine, damage is to parts of the brain- optic nerve, etc. Almost always have photophobia- extreme sensitivity to light. Distorted or blurred vision due to cloudiness in the lens or problems with cornea. Rapid and involuntary back and forth movement of eyes- can also result in loss of one eye"s acuity. Cannot focus on same object with both eyes- inward or outward pointing of both eyes- caused by muscle imbalance.
