Important in personal and family histories: significant alteration of trajectory, may be linked to transitions. Evolutionary psychology: emphasizes the importance of adaptation, reproduction, and survival of the fittest in shaping behavior, based on darwin"s (1859) ideas of natural selection. The big picture idea of natural selection leading to the development of human traits and behaviors is hard to refute or test because evolution occurs on a time scale that does not lend itself to empirical study . Investigates the influence of hereditary and environment on individual differences in human trait and development: twin studies, adoption studies, heredity-environment correlations. 23 pairs of chromosomes (23 from mom, 23 from dad: each pair contains thousands of genes one from father and one from mother, estimates of 20-25,000 genes, approximately 64 trillion different combinations per breeding couple.
