The goal of linguistics is to describe and ultimately explain human languages and the faculty. Mental grammar : the actual grammar of a language as it exits in the mind of its speakers. Descriptive grammars : is an attempt to model mental grammar. Lexicon : dictionary of arbitrary signs and associated information (exp: meaning, pronunciation, word class etc). Grammar : it consists of rules for manipulating signs and constraints on their distribution. Linguistic competence : it is the lexicon and grammar as it exists in our minds (what we know) Linguistic performance : it is language as we use it. Phenetics : the study of speech sound(human speech sound) Articulatory : it is how we produce speech sounds. English language has around 14 vowels base on the dialect. Phonetic transcription (ipa) : is the international phonetic alphabet that was developed in the late 19th century. Phonetic transcriptions are written in square brackets [ ].
