Document Summary
Is connectionism a constructionists" view or a generativists" view. Constructionist view because it uses the underlying pre existing structures in the brain. Generativists uses linguistic specific knowledge to learn language. Language is a system of patterns among smaller elements of sound or meaning. Repeated experience hearing examples of patterns results in children mentally representing an abstraction from those patterns which is the basis of children"s knowledge. This pattern learning procedure is used in other domains of learning as well. It does have form and semantic content. But it does not fit into the four essential properties of language. Not language because it is not generative, Have syntactic knowledge, they identify word worder. Evidence to support that human language is not specific to only humans. They can invent sentences and word combinations. Biologically determined period during which language acquisition must occur in order for language to be learned fully and correctly.
