Hard to teach oral language to deaf kids because lip reading is difficult. Producing accurate speech sounds without auditory feedback is also very hard. Most successful readers are those who are exposed to sign language from birth. Under 2 years is best becuase it is during critical period. Language is not tied to the auditory vocal system. Sign language acquisition is similar to spoken language acquistion. (social communication and this can be a huge motivator to learn to words) Without visual cues you cannot do this integration.
