Document Summary

A systematic way of recording language by means visual marks, called graphemes or graphs. There are different types of writing systems depending on whether graphemes represent meaning or sounds or both. Graphemes (the elements of writing) in english represent sounds. English"s writing system uses 26 letters/alphabets to spell out/represent sounds. The correspondence between grapheme and sound isn"t always 1-1. Temptation - 8 sounds - cvccvcvc or 9 if you pronounce the p . All the speech sounds in human languages are represented. It is not a system that is designed for a specific language, but a system that is geared to all languages. It is unambiguous - one symbol makes one sound. The same letters can represent different sounds (ie. sign v. pleasure v. resign) Need to know (many ipa symbols are from latin and greek alphabets) Need to know the terms and the symbols. Have to draw the entire 2 charts (vowels and consonants)
